It is extremely ironic Putin and the FSB were so focused on liquidating liberal dissent that they were blindsided by a revolt from extremists. This will serve as a huge morale boost for the Ukrainians and their Western allies. Whatever happens now, if he so chose, Putin has an off-ramp in the war in Ukraine. He can say he was betrayed at home and has no choice but to pull out to protect his own state. That is what dictators do.
