Open source can be daunting for young developers. Find something that you really like doing and then hopefully it is useful to a lot of people. Start contributing to several projects, get your work out there on GitHub. Once you've built up a c of sorts, a portfolio of soft wear that you've contributed to, that's going to help you get a job. Because it doesn't really matter what qualifications you've got to me.
