I think addressing those points in an open and clear way gives some confidence that they might want to listen to you on the rest of it. They look at the left that is united in defending ideas that they find to be wrongheaded. Why would they trust the left in anything else? Whereas if they see a debate within the left where people are willing to say, hey, these points we agree on these other points, then they might identify themselves with that. And unfortunately, sometimes leftist and the user are very bad at protecting that freedom from fear for their own members.
