The Rise and Fall of the Italian Empire

The Kingdom of Piedmont Sardinia was restored by the Congress of Vienna in 1815. The strongest of the post-Napoleonic Italian states, it had ambitions to peel away territory like an artichoke. In many places there wasn't even any kind of middle class to speak of. Many families who would produce these budding revolutionaries had done well in the Napoleonic Empire.
