The Misconception About What Scientists Really Want
If we get the same result that Brookhaven got, maybe with smaller air bars or less uncertainty, we'll know that one of two things has to be true. Either the theorist calculated this wrong, and that doesn't seem super likely, or there's new physics afoot. On the other hand, maybe they'll measure something different from Brookhaven got. Maybe they'll get a number closer to the standard model value, or maybe right on the standard modelvalue. And we'll know it was either just a statistical fluke, or maybe they made some sort of mistake, and the standard model will prevail once again.
