How I Met a High School English Teacher, and What I Learned From Her
In high school, I was going to be a high school English teacher. She said, Oh, Jan, you don't want to do that. We need to teach these kids to read. That planted a seed for sure. And then I started off at the University of Oregon and worked with people who were really approaching reading and teaching as a science. But the pull of the real world, what real teachers were doing in the classroom eventually pulled me away from university work. So that's sort of the journey, how I got to where I am today.
