Why Are Human Judges Worse Than Algorithms?
In bail decisions, whether people should be given bail, it turns out that algorithms outperform human judges. One reason is algorithms aren't noisy. And mugshot bias produces systematic error but it also produces a degree of noise because some judges are more mugshot bias than others. The algorithm just makes better calls about whether people are going to commit crimes.
