A recently discovered mycenaean sanctuary on the peninsula of Mithana was unusual in that it included rare terracotta chariot groups. Sailors rounding the cape could look up at the temple of Poseidon and say a prayer, or make a vow to him for a safe passage through these treacherous waters. Overlooking the shrine was a sanctuary of Demeter Thesmophoros, established by Poseidon's son, Althepos. In recognition of his connection with agriculture, the god was offered a parchi, or the first fruits from the crops.
