Glina was hired to teach english at a gymnasium in donesk. She and her daughter were the only two foreigners there, if we include her daughter. The pair became very close as they tried to blend in with their small town community. Galina grew up speaking russian but also spoke ucranian and many people so she had no occasion to use those languages during the soviet period. There's a kind of intimacy about it that felt very gender to me. And this intensity when you are very alone in a place where you feel rejected by other people.
