The T rule is the total number of parameters that you have in your model. U is the number of unique pieces of information, for example, in your variance covariance matrix. The null beta rule or the recursive rule are some of the labels given to these things. So I think it's usually hard to screw up when you just have a measured variable path model and confirmatory factor models.
