The modern wingsuit adds surface area to the human body to enable a significant increase in lift when falling. The greatest horizontal distance flown in a wingsuit is just under 19 miles. Daedalus warned his son not to fly too high or too low, but Icarus was having too much fun and flew higher than he'd ever been before. He felt the hot sun on his face and could smell the heat in the air - at that moment, he had gone too high and it was too late.
