The UN has calculated that about a third of the poor in the world are operating or living under the cloud of economic sanctions imposed by the West. They isolate regimes, they entrench regimes and repress dissent but don't seem to undermine them. Never have sanctions directly undermined the victim power that they were intended to do. Russia is probably the biggest and most powerful state to have concerted economic sanctions inflicted on it. The real problem is that Russia also has power to hit back. In other words, the economic war with Russia is quite separate from the war against Ukraine.
