Regression to the Mean
The concept of regression to the mean was popularized in the 19th century by British natural philosopher Sir Francis Galton. It's a phenomenon that keeps stable systems from veering off and becoming ever more extreme. When an individual has an extreme characteristic, that characteristic usually is not amplified in the next generation but tends to return to the mean value.
