Mendelsohn and his sister fanny wrote a series of short piano works, which they called songs without words. Th third movement is what people like to call a song without words. In one of my favourite composer lines ever, mendelsohn wrote to a friend who asked him to write lyrics to the songsqote, what the music i love expresses to me is not thought too indefinite to put into words, but on the contrary, too definitethe third movement of the symphony begins not with the theme, but with a turbulent introduction that has no definite key.
