The Apprenticeship as a Programmer
As a programmer I always did my academic work and my programming work side by side, but they were relatively separate from one another. When I left my PhD studies to go join Google, I probably got more benefit in terms of developing my craft as a programmer that first six months at Google. And anything else I did, the rest of my programming life wasn't apprenticeship. So like it was the special thing about the culture at the time is that your peer engineers valued spending their time in code reviews for building things.
