We have a special understanding of ourselves because we understand what we make in this case, history. And so there is a gulf between the two - but it's not lonism. If vice were saying that our knowledge of history could never attaind to much more than proby probability then he would be producing an enormous platitude. Nobody ever has doubted that historical statements do not possess the irrefragable certainty of an algebraical proof.
