Sailing ships could travel quickly and easily around the Baltic and up the rivers into Eastern Europe. The main medium of exchange was silver and gold, which could be carried and exchanged in raw nuggets or in small jewels like gold. Eventually some leaders and rulers in Scandinavia began to mint coins of their own. And from this period more English coins have been found in Scandinavia than in Britain itself.
