The Tree of Life, 12 Sorts of Fruit
In revelation, the trees by the river are the tree of life with 12 kinds of fruit. The theme of water flowing out from jesus appears at a number of points in john chapter 21. Jesus is the source of the spirit, the new temple from which the gift of the spirit will flow at pentecost. It seems likely that they counted and recorded the number of fish here at christ's own instruction.
