Fishing Boats Without a I S Signals
Large sea birds are attracted to fishing boats, especially ones with bait and offel on offer. It's this attraction that could make the birds good patrollers of the ocean, or ocean sentinels. Researchers taped small radar detecting g p s loggers on the backs of 169 albatrosses from the islands of crose kergelen and amsterdam in the southern indian ocean. During a six month period, the birds made multiple foraging trips to the sea covering an area of more than forty seven million square kilometers. In the process, about a hundred of these boats had no a i s signal, suggesting they could be operating illegally.
