The Effects of Core Body Temperature on Sleep

In order to fall asleep and stay asleep, our core body temperature needs to drop at least two degrees. Why does it need to drop for us to have a great REM sleep and deep sleep? Well, that's a good question; we don't know. A hypothesis is that the major reason for the drop in temperature is energy conservation. And simply an adaptation which is carried through in all mammals and birds.
