The key to solving this problem is what we call metacognition. The dopamine pathways, when they go unrecognized, are an entirely limbic phenomenon. If you can move the experience of cravings and desires and emotions to the front part of your brain, then you don't have to be managed by them. That's what therapy is supposed to do. Some people love going to therapy because they're getting a PhD in their own minds if you have a good therapist.
