In the late nineteenth century, states began keeping photographs of their subjects for all sorts of purposes. The ottoman state photographed ottoman armenians who declared that they wanted to emigrate. So what's interesting is a state photographing its own subjects at the very moment that they are becoming non subjects. That's why the project is portraits of un belonging - because i am interested in these photographs as documents of exclusion.
