Could Louis the Pious Have Done More During His Life to Prevent the Eventual Disintegration of the Carolingian Empire?
In the frankish world, it wasn't yet established practice for the oldest child to automatically inherit the entire kingdom. Instead, a territory would have to be equally divided among the leg mate sons of a king. louis was well aware that the empire would be partitioned among his children. He formalized that arrangement in a series of decrees with the express intent that peace be maintained between those separate kingdoms and that the empire as a whole would remain intact.
