Sphinxes were originally egyptian monsters. The sphinx was sent by the gods to plague the greek town of thebes as a curse for some crime. Her favorite activity seemed to be tormenting travellers who were coming and going from the town. She would pounce upon her unsuspecting victims and force them to solve this riddle she was obsessed with before she would let them pass or not.
