The Explanatory Buck Stops With Avicenna

Avicenna exploits our intuition that the things around us, from giraffes to planets, and indeed the universe as a whole, could quite easily not exist. So the fact that the universe does exist seems to cry out for an explanation. Avicenna wants to do is to prove that there is indeed a necessary existent. This, of course, would be God. To deny that there is any such thing would mean insisting that everything that exists is contingent.
