Derivatives - A Brief Introduction
Derivatives contracts are a varying duration, running sometimes to 20 or more years. Their value is often tied to several variables and their ultimate value also depends on the credit worthiness of counterparties too then. Both reinsurance and derivatives businesses are easy to enter in almost impossible connection. Once you write a contract which may require large payment decades later, you are usually stuck with it.
