The concept of information comes from Claude Shannon in the mid- 1900s. He was considered the father of modern information theory. The key features are that it's reduction in uncertainty, copyable and retains its meaning. When I first came across this concept about energy being neither created nor destroyed, I still find it difficult to get into my head.
