The OI horizon surface layer is where you've got that duff, that stuff that's like clearly plant or animal material. And then beyond that is the OA, OA is where it's so decomposed, you can't tell if it's animal waste or like plant remains. The reason you need to know these layers is so you can tell if your soils will create more of these decomposition byproducts like nitrogen.
