The Past Perfect and the Simple Past in English

i'm not very good at telling what english does i don't really remember exactly how it is. have heard that the past perfect is used for different things in the u.s and in britain but uh it's like one of them will be for um something you something that you continue to do to the present day and one of them would be a long time ago. The point is that the semantic space that the two forms are taking are different One is taking more meanings from the other if it keeps going it could just completely wipe the other one out.
