In 1812, the U.S. Congress declared war on Great Britain without first making any kind of preparations. It was predicted what this resulted in among other things was a foreign army marching into Washington. In fact, if you take a private tour of the White House today, you can still see smoke stains in the White House. And it's obviously the low point, not only of Madison's career, but of this entire period.
