The Moon and Stephen's Separation
The bird and serpent conflict is a basic mythological motif. In certain mythologies they stand as enemies, like in biblical mythology where the serpent is cursed with winged powers. Stephen himself will synthesize the serpent image with that of the bird when he experiences the girl on the beach as a dove. But now, returning to our story, images of the moon accompany Stephen's feelings of separation from his father and his father's cronies. He has not experienced the orthodox sentiments of childhood and young manhood. What do you do when you don't experience orthodox sentiments? Can you go on accepting the world that lives by them?"
