The Path to a Career as a Composer

In the 1980s composers were trying to make careers outside of like a kind of somewhat insular downtown avant-garde and so at Yale they're encouraged to do that. The neo-romantics who start out at places like Princeton Writing Academic Music decide to instead write very kind of sumptuous 19th century style music. They don't see a lot for their generation of composers reaching mainstream audiences although that is certainly happening in certain places of New York. In 1987 these composers started this concert marathon with the goal of mixing different styles of contemporary music as an eclectic mix.
