In 1970, Nixon proposes universal healthcare delivered by 1700 HMOs. Reagan is like, this is my moment because he loves market-based solutions to social problems. The insurance companies are like, we can make more money from doing this. We might have the most costly, inefficient, wasteful and inequitable health system in the world, but that is exactly what the insurance companies love.
