Control of Breathing
respiration is automatic, just like the heartbeat. You don't need to think about it in order to do it. That is governed by the medulla ablongata - part of the brain stem. It sends signals every few seconds to the diaphragm and abdominal muscles for forceful exhalation or inhale. And you can also use that, of course, for holding your breath. But those are only activated when we need a lot of extra oxygen and carmon oxide are to be exchanged.
