The Iliad: A History of Homer
The Iliad includes aspects from the Mycenaean period, but that there are even earlier bits that get shoved in to the Iliad as well. So like the figure of the Ajax with the big shield is probably an earlier hero because they weren't even using shields of that type by the time Homer is supposed to have been writing about. For me, what's most interesting when we're looking at Homer is how people viewed their own past and what that meant to them.
