Shimozawa Kan and the Shin San Goomi

Shimozawa Kan was born in Atuta on Hokkaido. His grandfather Umitane Jujiro was among the many former retainers of the Tokugawa Shogane. Shimozawa positioned the Shin San Goomi as loyal national policemen, concerned with maintaining order during disordered time. The success of the series kickstarted Shimozawa's career, making him a popular writer until his death in 1960s.
