In 1831, Muhammad Ali invaded northward, again much like Napoleon had done before him. He forced the Sultan to recognize and accept him as the dynastic ruler or cadiv of Egypt. But nonetheless, Muhammad Ali in return accepted Ottoman overlordship. So this sort of negotiated truth with Muhammad Ali you can see as closing the main kind of tumultuous period of military reform in the empire. Once it was completed, allowed for the next wave, a resumed diplomatic and commercial opening to the west.
