Every breath you get on a ventilator causes some degree of injury. Most of what we do is trying to minimize the amount of time or other factors that cause injury on a Ventilator. The principle there is is everything we do now is positive pressure ventilation, which is a completely abnormal, non physiologica way of breathing.
