Freud's Super Ego

Freud believed that there were three parts of the mind, the id, the ego and the super ego. The Id represents our animal instincts, and it wants instant gratification. The super ego polices the id and strives for perfection. And in a wonderful turn of phrase, he compares this super ego to a garrison in a conquered city. Its set up within us and makes sure that we behave. In freyd's view, humans aren't just hostile towards one another, but also towards ourselves. We oppress ourselves.
