George Salah coined the phrase 'marvellous Melbourne' in 1985. He was on a lecture tour and wanted to tell people what he thought of his new home. But critics, enemies in Sydney then twist it into marvellous smelbon or marvellous smell boom when the crash occurred. It's also an example of what Bob Schiller calls new-era thinking or new-era economic narratives. Now, when by the time of the crash comes, the phrase pretty well disappears.
