The Story of Virginia Carpenter

The toddler's life became a series of painful therapy and treatments, including sun baths that required her to sit on a tar roof in the heat of the day for hours at a time. When she started kindergarten in 1932, the five-year-old was so self-conscious about her brace that she stopped eating. In 1942, when she was 15 years old, Virginia spent countless hours by her father's bed.
