"I don't think initially, unconsciously, he probably knew that what was happening to Japanese Americans was wrong. But I don't think he had the words for it that we might have today," she says. "Fred decides to get an ID with a Spanish sounding last name on it, so he won't be recognized as Japanese." He and his wife Ida also considered having plastic surgery but decided against it because they didn't want to break the law.
