The Theory of Nuclear Deterrent
Deterrence is a concept about trying to influence an adversary without the actual use of force. The initial idea is that the threat of a nuclear response should convince an adversary not to attack you because of this nuclear sponse. During the cold war, both sides developed capability to respond even after having been attacked. Both sides would know that if they did attack the other side, they wouldn't be able to annihilate the capabilities of the other rather, they'd risk a massive retaliation. And so this condition of er mutual vulnerability, or mad produced,. according to many theorists and scholars and policy makers, a more stable situation between these two great powers.
