How to Automate Homebrew Updates
A brew install now does a brew update in the background. It's optimized for the no op case where if you don't actually have anything to update there, then it will just ignore it. A recent thing that could have made the 1.0 release notes, but actually I kind of pruned it from there is we don't we used to let you run her brew is root. Because if you can run home brew is root, but we don't, by other package managers that run is root, they drop privileges because that's what they're supposed to do.
