The Different Shapes of Lions and Tigers Pupils

The theory is that vertical pupils sort of blur the image on the horizontal axis and that lets you use the horizontal blur to help you estimate depth. When something is more blurry or less blurry, you can like, oh, I know that that's farther or closer away. And through their meta analysis, they found that height of the animal correlates with rounder pupils. So basically like the trade off is that when you have the vertical pupil, it actually it does make the world blurrier but then they use that blurriness to help them judge distances. The image is a little less clear, but they can now sense how far away it is better.
