The Origins of Greek Statues
The early classical period also saw an increase in the use of freestanding statues as decorations for buildings. Such sculptures could either be public in the sense of having been paid for with state funds or private but they did not serve as pieces of private art in the modern sense. The concerns though are how true to the original Greek bronze statue is the Roman marble copy and how accurate are the written sources of Pausanias and Pliny in their descriptions. As old statues were recycled often and reinvented for new ones or melt it down from money when faced with harsh economic times and war especially in the latter part of the Roman Empire.
