Walter Ruther: A Giant
Walter Ruther led the United Auto Workers from 1936 to 1946. He became national president of the UAW in 1946, ultimately leading 5 million members. This was when manufacturing accounted for 32% of all US jobs; that number is now 8.5%. The famed hysteric Senator Barry Goldwater once said that Ruther was more dangerous to America than Russia was.
