The Decline of the Money Supply
M1 has fallen by 5.8% of the past year, compared to a 2.4% decline in M2. Money market mutual funds pay much more competitive interest rates than banks. In addition to higher US inflation and interest rates, the exchange rate of the US dollar has been falling recently. The ability of the money supply to drive or predict economic activity has collapsed in recent decades.
