So what kind of mode of production was predominant in these developed civilizations? Yeah, this is a very interesting question. I will say that the mode ofProduction was very similar to what Marx described as the Asiatic mode of production. This was not based on slavery. Feudalism is based on private ownership of the land which belongs to the lord and then the persons who are attached to the land pay tribute to the lord for the right to use that land. And this did not exist in any of these societies. It was a completely different system, as I said, which was largely self-sufficient. it involved agriculture, but also the manufacturing of tools, clothing, and so on
