State legislatures do have an important role in setting the curriculum for what we expect to be taught in K through 12 classes. The scope of academic freedom there is really much more restricted and different than what we expect in universities. We shouldn't lose sight of the fact that the public school curriculum is determined through a political process. And it's going to be restricted in various ways through the public process.
